ORAL PROPHYLAXIS
Oral prophylaxis represents
an effective measure in controlling
microbial factors responsible for the emergence of many diseases in the
oral cavity and oral halitosis. Consists of removing deposits from the tooth
surfaces, supragingival and
subgingival, removing plaque, tartar and stains.
Although it is sometimes unnoticed by the patient, bacterial plaque, in any form, is more virulent below the gum line and its removal has great therapeutic value. For example, when periodontal disease has been installed, the removal of the deposits is no longer a prevention method, but a treatment method for stopping the disease, or a pre-surgical stage.
The patients cannot observe by themselves in due time if there is dental illness or what is the severity of their dental problem, therefore regular visits to the dentist are required (twice a year).
It can also be a preparation method for
periodontal therapy, both surgical and non-surgical, maintenance and support of antimicrobial treatments,
and the treatment of dentine hypersensitivity.
Phases of a complete prophylaxis:
- execution of the dental hygiene and nutritional counseling
- oral hygiene instruction
- brushing techniques, flossing and interdental brushes
- viewing of plaque with plaque markers
- ultrasonic scaling and manual scaling
- air-flow and polishing tooth surfaces
- professional cleaning
- washing with antimicrobial solutions above and below the gum
- topical fluoridation
- sealing grooves and recesses
- applying desensitizing agents on the areas with exposed dentine
- space maintainers
